Supporting Your Skin Health From the Inside Out

We have all heard the saying, you are what you eat.

When it comes to your skin, which is our largest organ, there is a major connection between what is happening on the inside, and what appears on the outside. One of the most important contributions to healthy skin is your gut health.

Your Skin and Gut: Unexpected Companions

Your skin and your gut are closely connected to each other. The skin absorbs the nutrients that are delivered by the blood supply. If your gut is in poor health, the reflection of this can show up on your skin in multiple ways including: rosacea, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation, acne, and other inflammatory issues.

Some of the most important nutrients that feed and heal your gut as well as your skin are Omegas 3,6 & 9 (fatty acids), Pre and Probiotics, and Vitamins A,C,E,D, & K.

A diet rich in whole foods (such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains) provides your gut with a variety of nutrients that help promote the growth of different types of bacteria, resulting in a more diverse gut flora and healthier skin. You can increase these nutrients not only through the foods you eat, and the products you use (hello Vital Nutrient Complex), but also with adaptogenic herbs and supplements.

Combating Stress For Healthier Skin

A group that includes more than 70 plants, Adaptogens are a class of herbs with stress reducing and immune boosting properties, and as the name suggests, they adapt to meet your needs by combating chronic stress to bring your body into balance. Adaptogens can be added to your food, steeped into a tea or taken in capsule or tincture form.

Chronic stress causes our bodies to overproduce the stress hormone, cortisol. And cortisol can create the permeability issues seen with leaky gut and all the symptoms that go with an unhealthy gut, including skin conditions.

Adaptogens You Can Try Today

Below, we take a deeper look at a few adaptogens, that along with a healthy diet, can have a positive impact on your gut and skin health:

CBD – CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system which is responsible for regulating many bodily functions. CBD works with the vast network of receptors in our body and supports many of the body’s physical processes. CBD enables homeostasis (balance) of the body, and when it binds to the endocannabinoid system’s receptors, it can help regulate stress and stimulate all kinds of therapeutic changes.

Ashwagandha – An important herb in ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha may help strengthen the immune system and reduce stress which greatly affects gut and skin health.

Schisandra – This herb enhances liver health by promoting detoxifying enzymes and stabilizing blood sugars, as well as acting as an adaptogen. It may also help protect the body against environmental toxins that cause cellular damage.

Triphala – Praised for its benefits on digestion,Triphala is known to soothe and calm the intestinal walls, cleans toxic buildup, and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut. But the benefits of this powerful herb don’t stop at the gut. Triphala is very high in antioxidants and delivers a potent dose of vitamin C which are highly beneficial when it comes to strengthening the skin.

Maca – Incredibly nutrient dense, Maca has many benefits. It’s packed with vitamin C that increases collagen production and fights free radicals that can lead to accelerated aging. Maca also helps reduce cortisol levels and replenish your adrenals from the impact of chronic stress.

Keeping your body and gut in a state of homeostasis (or balance) is the key to healthy, glowing skin.
