Whether you’re a seasoned cannabis enthusiast or new to the scene, an unexpected THC overload isn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Stay chill with these five tips designed to help you power through.

Relax, Just Do It

First and foremost, stop, take a deep breath, and remember: no one has ever overdosed on THC alone. If you find yourself feeling overly anxious from consuming THC edibles, cannabis beverages, or classic flower, it’s helpful to engage in calming activities to recenter yourself. Practice deep breathing, turn on a relaxing meditation, listen to mellow music, or get some fresh air and decompress in nature.

Hydrate and Munch!

Staying hydrated is crucial whether you’re having a THC freakout or not. But in the instance of the former, you can reach for water or herbal tea to refresh yourself and help flush out your system more quickly. Additionally, munching on light, healthy snacks like fruits, crackers or nuts can help reduce the intensity of your high and give you a much-needed boost of energy.

Distract Yourself

Sometimes, the best way to deal with being too high is to simply distract yourself. Draw in a notebook, organize a drawer, play a game, make a craft or do something physical like taking a walk or doing light yard work. Finding a good distraction can take you out of your head and shift your mental focus away from that pesky anxiety and paranoia.

Embrace CBD

CBD, or cannabidiol, is said to help thwart the psychoactive effects of THC if you’ve overindulged. CBD has been shown to promote relaxation and minimize nervous feelings, making it a great option for balancing out the impact of cannabis overconsumption. Keep CBD beverages on hand that do not contain any THC to help mellow your high and deliver a sense of peace.

Connect with a Friend

Never underestimate the power of human connection. Reach out to a good friend for moral support if you need to. Talking out your feelings or simply distracting yourself with good conversation can help alleviate stress, provide reassurance and make the experience manageable and easier to navigate.

Weed-related paranoia can happen to anyone, and has happened to even the most experienced cannabis users. Take it easy and know that the anxiety you’re feeling won’t last forever. In the future, setting an intention before your sesh may help you feel more enlightened, purposeful, and in control. Keep these helpful tips in mind if you end up overindulging, and remember, sometimes the only way out is through.
