CBD Oil vs CBD Tinctures

CBD Oil vs CBD Tinctures: The Similarities and Subtle Differences

Not all that long ago, few people had even heard of CBD. Today, adults of all ages are embracing the many potential benefits of this natural plant element. If you’ve recently decided to add CBD to your daily routine, you’ve likely discovered a vast assortment of similar products. Which should you choose? That depends.

When you want a versatile product that allows you to adjust serving sizes as needed, consider investing in a high-quality CBD oil or tincture. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, these products are not exactly the same. Once you know how CBD tinctures and oils are made, it’s much easier to select the option best suited to your needs, preferences, and lifestyle.

What Is CBD?

CBD is the commonly used abbreviation for cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis. There are two potential sources, marijuana and hemp. Marijuana plants typically produce varying amounts of CBD and high levels of delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid that causes the type of euphoria associated with medicinal and recreational use. Hemp crops produce high levels of CBD but only trace amounts of THC (0.3% or less).

How Do Tinctures and Oils Compare?

The terms CBD “oil” and CBD “tincture” are typically used to identify products that look the same and are used for similar purposes. This can cause a considerable amount of confusion, particularly for those who know how tinctures are usually made. However, you may find it at least somewhat helpful to know that true CBD tinctures are relatively uncommon.

Instead of following the long-standing definition of “tincture,” many CBD brands simply adopted (or adapted) the term to identify CBD-infused products sold in dropper-topped bottles. But not always. Since you can’t necessarily count on the consistent use of either term from one brand to the next, you may want to consider the following points while browsing your options.

Tinctures Typically Contain Alcohol

By traditional definition, a tincture is an extract made by placing plant stalks, stems, seeds, or flowers in a suspension of alcohol. Although effective and inexpensive, tinctures are known to be quite bitter. That’s why manufacturers usually add flavoring agents, vegetable glycerin, and sweeteners to improve the flavor. If you purchase a traditionally formulated CBD tincture, you’ll consume a small amount of alcohol with each serving in exchange for a longer shelf life (3-5 years).

CBD Oil Is Blended for Enhance Bioavailability

High-Quality CBD oil is typically CO2-extracted, a production method that helps retain the natural flavor profile. Once the oil is refined, the extracts are blended with a carrier oil to enhance cannabinoid absorption, improve bioavailability, and ensure product consistency. Since CBD oil is made with a blend of hemp extract, a carrier oil, and other ingredients, some companies believe “tincture” is the more accurate description, while others feel “CBD oil” is more commonly used and less confusing. Either way, products blended with a carrier oil are shelf-stable for 1-2 years.
